Summary:

An American reporter’s chilling account of being kidnapped and imprisoned by the Taliban, in the no-man’s-land between Afghanistan and Pakistan

Jere Van Dyk was on the wrong side of the border. He and three Afghan guides had crossed into the tribal areas of Pakistan, where no Westerner had ventured for years, hoping to reach the home of a local chieftain by nightfall. But then a dozen armed men in black turbans appeared over the crest of a hill.

Captive is Van Dyk’s searing account of his forty-five days in a Taliban prison, and it is gripping and terrifying in the tradition of the best prison literature. The main action takes place in a single room, cut off from the outside world, where Van Dyk feels he can trust nobody—not his jailers, not his guides (who he fears may have betrayed him), and certainly not the charismatic Taliban leader whose fleeting appearances carry the hope of redemption as well as the prospect of immediate, violent death.

Van Dyk went to the tribal areas to investigate the challenges facing America there. His story is of a deeper, more personal challenge, an unforgettable tale of human endurance.

Duration: 9 hours, 42 minutes

Writer: Brigitte Gabriel

Publisher: January 2007

Narrators: Brigitte Gabriel

Rating: 4.27 / 5

Summary:

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam. In 1975 she was ten years old and living in Southern Lebanon when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into her country and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians, which became the first front in a worldwide jihad of fundamentalist Islam against non-Muslim peoples. For seven years, Brigitte and her parents lived in an underground bomb shelter, without running water or electricity and very little food. Because They Hate is a political wake-up call. Brigitte warns that the United States is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was––radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries. Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Gabriel tells her own story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

Publisher: July 2000

Narrators: Dennis Miller

Rating: 0 / 5

Summary:

Why are Americans so disinterested in politics? Because we can be. Democracy is voluntary. And our lack of interest hasn’t happened overnight. It can be traced directly back to our ever-decreasing attention spans. We need anything politically important rationed out like Pez-small, sweet, and coming out of a funny plastic head.

Why has flying in this country, especially boarding the plane, turned into this tedious Bataan death march with American Tourister overnight bags? And when did flight attendants get so cranky?

Who do we find ourselves locked in this pointless pas de doo-doo over something called “arts funding?” The federal tab involved here is a lousy 500 million dollars. One-fifth the national budget! Less than the money spent on 1-900 calls from Air Force One.

Mothers, immigration, marriage, parenthood, sports, political correctness, and our general attitudes toward each other-all are equally worthy of Dennis Miller’s close inspection and ridicule. What’s really going on in this country? Ask Dennis Miller. Or don’t ask. He’ll tell you anyway. Not that he really wants to go off on another rant. Remember, it’s only his opinion, he could be wrong.

Book Details:

Duration: 6 hours, 16 minutes

Writer: Peter Schweizer

Publisher: October 2005

Narrators: Grover Gardner

Rating: 3.75 / 5

Summary:

Prominent liberals support a whole litany of policies and principles: progressive taxes, affirmative action, greater regulation of corporations, raising the inheritance tax, strict environmental regulations, children’s rights, consumer rights, and more. But do they actually live by these beliefs? Peter Schweizer decided to investigate the private lives of politicians like the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, the Kennedys, and Ralph Nader; commentators Michael Moore, Al Franken, Noam Chomsky, and Cornel West; entertainers or philanthropists Barbra Streisand and George Soros. Using publicly-available real estate records, IRS returns, court depositions, and their own published statements, he sought to examine whether they lived by the principles they so forcefully advocate.

What he found was a long list of contradictions. Many of these proponents of organized labor had developed various methods to sidestep paying union wages or avoid employing unions altogether. They were also adept at avoiding taxes; invested heavily in corporations they had denounced; took advantage of foreign tax credits to use non-American labor overseas; espoused environmental causes while opposing those that might affect their own property rights; hid their investments in trusts to avoid paying estate tax; denounced oil companies but quietly owned them.

Schweizer’s conclusion is simple: liberalism in the end forces its adherents to become hypocrites. They adopt one pose in public, but when it comes to what matters most in their own lives–their property, their privacy, and their children–they jettison their liberal principles and adopt conservative ones. If these ideas don’t work for the very individuals who promote them, Schweizer asks, how can they work for the country?

Book Details:

Duration: 12 hours, 30 minutes

Writer: Michael Moore

Publisher: September 2011

Narrators: Michael Moore

Rating: 3.67 / 5

Summary:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Moore returns with his first major book in eight years — a blend of memoir, history, and politics that only he could write.

“I had an unusually large-sized head, though this was not uncommon for a baby in the Midwest. The craniums in our part of the country were designed to leave a little extra room for the brain to grow in case one day we found ourselves exposed to something we didn’t understand, like a foreign language, or a salad.”

Michael Moore-Oscar-winning filmmaker, bestselling author, the nation’s unofficial provocateur laureate-is back, this time taking on an entirely new role, that of his own meta-Forest Gump.

Breaking the autobiographical mode, he presents twenty-four far-ranging, irreverent, and stranger-than-fiction vignettes from his own early life. One moment he’s an eleven-year-old boy lost in the Senate and found by Bobby Kennedy; and in the next, he’s inside the Bitburg cemetery with a dazed and confused Ronald Reagan. Fast-forwarding to 2003, he stuns the world by uttering the words “We live in fictitious times . . . with a fictitious president” in place of the expected “I’d like to thank the Academy.”

And none of that even comes close to the night the friendly priest at the seminary decides to show him how to perform his own exorcism.

Capturing the zeitgeist of the past fifty years, yet deeply personal and unflinchingly honest, Here Comes Trouble takes readers on an unforgettable, take-no-prisoners ride through the life and times of Michael Moore. No one will come away from this book without a sense of surprise about the Michael Moore most of us didn’t know. Alternately funny, eye-opening, and moving, it’s a book he has been writing-and living-his entire life.
